Free tip 05 / Claim payment
When and how does a Texas unclaimed property claim get paid?
Approval is not the last detail to check. I read the payment notice against the claim and the stock instruction, then make sure the check or shares reach the right place.
Next: claim typesRead the notice against your claim
After approval, the payment email and attached notice should explain what was paid and how. Compare the listed property IDs and cash amounts with your claim records. The office sometimes creates or splits claim IDs while processing a case; keep track of each number and ask about one you cannot reconcile.
If you are expecting a check
For a cash payment, I typically see a check arrive by mail within about 10 business days after the payment notice, though delivery can vary. If it was returned to the office, ask about reissue. If it never arrives, ask the office about a replacement; in my experience they have handled requests once 30 days have passed from mailing. A bank may place a temporary hold on a large deposited check.
If your claim included shares
If you chose liquidation, check whether the notice includes stock sale proceeds. If you chose a transfer, the first page should say shares are being transferred and the destination should match your signed stock instruction. If you requested liquidation but the notice says transfer, contact the Comptroller promptly; there may be a short window to correct the instruction before shares move on. Follow the instructions and contact details on your own notice for that claim.
These timelines and warning signs come from my casework. The actual payment details depend on the property, the signed instruction, and the Comptroller’s decision.
